‘Graceful’ Aditi makes her point, on ex marital relationship

Marathi plays on ex marital relationship, are not new to Marathi drama lovers. In the recent past, we saw a play ‘Aamhi Sou Kumud Prabhakar Apte’ with Pratiksha Lonkar and Aishwarya Narkar playing the first and second wife respectively, of  Late Prabhakar Apte.  It presented  each other’s point of view, for their identity as Ms. Kumud Prabhakar Apte.
Aditi Sarangdhar, Asha Shelar, Actress
Now, director Rajan  Tamhane presents the same subject,  once again, in a different way, through his latest play ‘Graceful’. Written by  Mahesh Ghatpande and produced by Anuradha Wagh,  this latest Marathi play portrays  two women, in the life of a celebrity script writer.  First one is his middle aged  married wife ( Asha Shelar) and the other is a young graceful  TV actress( Aditi Sarandhar) , with whom he is in  ‘live in relationship’.   ‘Graceful’ presents these  two women characters, throughout the play,  who try to prove their love and affection towards  the writer.  While his wife tries to argue, stating that she being  his official wife, commands  all the respect, while his actress girlfriend, also claims that she is also  the wife of the writer, and receives all the love and affection from him.

The play not only present the argument and point of view of the two women; but, also has few moments, to surprise the audience. In this play, though the character of writer exists only through his conversation over phone and in the background; he does not appear on the stage. Though the writer had limited content, it was enough scope for the director to use  audio visual display, to show  some flashback moments, as noticed now days in many popular plays. But, that does not happen in this play.

One expected the celebrity writer to appear in the last scene;  but once again, you only get to hear his voice from the fresh room. Therefore, in the entire play you only find these two women, proving their point. Nevertheless, both Aditi Sarangdhar and Asha Shelar ( Janhavi’s mother in popular TV serial ‘Honar Suun Mi Hya Gharchi)have displayed their potential as versatile actresses, through their impulsiveness,  while exhibiting  their emotional outburst , during  different scenes.

Wonderful set design by Pradeep Muley , costumes designed by Geeta Godbole add  luster,  to this emotion filled play. It is a sincere effort by both the actresses, to make this women oriented play , presentable.

Priya BapatLast year Marathi films not only did good business; but, they were well appreciated by critics and audience. Best examples are films like ‘Time Pass’, ‘Lai Bhari’, ‘Dr.Prakash Baba Amte’, ‘Happy Journey’, ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Poshter Boyz’, ‘Viti Dandu’,  ‘Rege’ &  Rama Madhav’. But, compared to last year, now during the first eight months of this year, we haven’t noticed much of appreciation from the audience for Marathi films, except for few films like ‘Mitwa’, ‘Classmates’, ‘Deool Band’, ‘Coffee Aani Barach Kaahi’, ‘Lokmanya’ & ‘Double Seat’.

There were films like national award winning film ‘Court’, ‘Killa’, ‘Time Pass2′ which claimed to have done good business with simultaneous releKaakan Marathi FIlm, Urmila Kotharease at maximum cinema halls; but the audience didn’t like them. This was clearly noticed through the reactions posted by film lovers on social networking sites and their overall reaction at public places, while taking about these films.  There were some films like ‘Kakan’, ‘Welcome Zindagi’, ‘Nilkanth Master’, ‘Bioscope’ ,’Dhinchak Enterprise’ and recently released ‘Highway’, which had good concept, but, the audience did not respond much, as expected. Other films like   ‘Slambook’ & ‘Shortcut’, ‘Baji’, ‘Murder Mestri’, ‘Sata Lota Pan Sagala Khota’, ‘Janiva’, ‘Online Binline’, ‘Tujhya Vina Mar Javaan’ failed to appeal the audience.  Many of these films, had created a lot of hype, through their promotion; but that did not benefit the film in any way.

Mukta Barve
Today, Marathi film audience is becoming smarter day by day. Now, they look for both quality and entertainment in a film, besides good story. Will the forthcoming Marathi big banner films, be able to fulfill their requirement? The result of films like ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai-2′, ‘Tu Hi Re’ & ‘Katyar Kaljaat Ghusali’ will tell the truth.

Teacher’s day reminds us of few memorable Marathi film characters

Dahavi Pha, Pinjra MovieCome Teacher’s day and it takes us down memory lane to recollect, who were those great actors who played the roles of ideal  teachers in Marathi films. The first character comes to our mind is that of a school master played by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo and his tragic tale in V.Shantaram‘s hit film Pinjara.

Later, there were many films and many Marathi actors have played ideal teachers in subsequent Marathi films. And, how can we forget the name of Atul Kulkarni, whose performance as a teacher in the film Dahavi Fa brought many popular awards to this sensible film. Sandeep Kulkarni, also portrayed a committed school teacher in the film Night school few years ago. Very recently, we saw Nagesh Bhosale, who otherwise plays negative role, playing the role of an ideal teacher and his fight  against injustice ,with the support  of  some of his ex students.

Our films are best medium to pass a social message through feature films. And, the strong characters of teachers in these films, play a very important role. Marathi Movie World salutes all those actors, who played this role, to help bring that desired change in the society and also inspire the audience.

Studio/presenter: Indian Film Studio
Producer: Mrudala Padwal Oza, Shital Kumbhar Manere
Director: Sanjay Jadhav
Story: Manaswini Lata Ravindra
Screenplay , Dialogues :
Arvind Jagtap
Music: Amitraj, Pankaj Padgham
Director of Photography: Prasad Bhende
Genres: Romantic
Rating:fullfullfull
Censor: U/A
Duration: 125 Min.
Cast:  Tejaswini Pandit, Swapnil Joshi, Sai Tamhankar, Girish Oak, Sushant Shelar, Mrinal Jadhav

Over the years, Marathi films have made tremendous progress in presenting their subjects with good technical support, finest locations and glamorous costumes; almost on par with big banner Hindi films. At the same time, some of our film makers were also influenced by South films and officially attempted remakes of original south films into Marathi. The best examples are, films like Classmates‘, ‘Shutterand Time Bara Vait‘. But, only ‘Classmates’ did very good business, as it was focused on young generation, as target audience.

Now, Filmmaker Sanjay Jadhav’s latest released film ‘Tu Hi Re also falls in this category. Starring Swwapnil Joshi, Sai Tamhankar & Tejaswini Pandit in the lead roles, this film is inspired by 2006 Tamil Film ‘Silunu Oru Kaadhal’. And, this has been officially declared by the filmmaker, in the credits, appearing at the end of the film.
swapnil joshi, Tejaswini Pandit, Sai Tamhankar
In the beginning of the film, you find a young pretty woman Nandini (Sai Tamhankar) taking bath in a pond with beautiful surrounding . Actually, she is advertising for a popular talcum powder. A good thinking by the filmmaker. And, you soon realise that she is a typical village girl, on the lines of Bollywood films of 60s and 70s. She is more keen on love marriage; but, her parents fix her marriage with a young Engineer Siddharth (Swwapnil Joshi) son of their family friend. Soon, we come to know that it is a marriage against the wish of both these youngsters.

But, soon we see the shift , showing the same couple happily married after eight years and living with their little seven year old daughter Piyu( Mrunal Jadhav) in a posh Mumbai apartment. Looking at their behaviour, you feel as if they are just married. But, one fine day, Nandini receives a courier parcel containing some photos, revealing the past story of her husband and his so called affair with a beautiful girl Bhairavi( Tejaswini Pandit), who is the daughter of a wealthy Parliamentarian ( Dr.Girish Oak) , living in Pune. So, she verifies the facts from Siddharth’s friend( Sushant Shelar) and proceeds to Pune to meet that girl. On her return, she surprises her husband and what transpires, is what you notice in climax of this film.

With this limited story, director Sanjay Jadhav has tried to make this film interesting, with the help of good dialogues, finest locations, wonderful photography by Prasad Bhende, good music provided by the trio Pankaj Padghan, Amitraj and Shashank Powar .Though in the first half, he could not generate much interest in the screenplay, he has cleverly managed to hold his grip on the interesting happenings, which gives a different look, to this so called love triangle. All the three important artistes Swwapnil, Sai and Tejaswini have given their best. But, it is Tejaswini, who steals the show. Perhaps, for the first time, she has been used in such a glam filled role. She has not only impressed the audience with her performance; but, also with her striking looks, with those beautiful designer costumes.

There is a small drawback in this film, as care has not been taken to present the original Tamil story, to suit especially Marathi audience. Our Marathi audience will surely notice it. Nevertheless, ‘Tu Hi Re’ is a technically well presented film, almost on par with any big banner Hindi film, based on such a theme. If you have liked all the love stories of Yash Chopra, don’t miss this film, as the treatment given to the story is the same.

Dr Amol Kolhe, Actor

I remember getting nervous and scared on that day (was in 9th std) because I was made Principal on that day. The very chair, dreaded and feared, by students was to be occupied by me and that too in front of all the teachers. But the moment I sat on that chair the fear ran away and I grilled the teachers to the merriment of students.

My teacher, a polish national, who used to teach us Direction, sensed my loneliness in a foreign country and started visiting me everyday. He even used to get tiffin for me (actually an unusual thing in the US culture) and looked after me like a father. He was sympathetic without making much ado about it. That really pepped me up to recover faster.”

Vijay Chavan Actor Pictures
Usually ‘Drags’ are not appreciated by sensible audiences. Almost everybody who played drag couldn’t resist temptation of below the belt humor but one actor who do not fall into this category is Vijay Chavan. When he donned a sari to play a female character of Mavshi (maternal aunt) in a Marathi play ‘Moruchi Mavshi’ he was appreciated and adored by the audiences and his appearance as Mavshi for around 3000 times proves it. After doing competitive theatre when he got an opportunity on professional theatre, first with ‘Tur Tur’ and then ‘Moruchi Mavshi’, there has been no looking back. But after so many years and 250 films he is still grounded. He did about 50 plays and each one of them crossed 100 shows and that’s no small feat. He has always stood out among many big names leaving his own stamp in movies or plays.

Vijay Chavan, fondly referred to as Vijumama by the industry people, was the first recipient of honour ‘Not Out’, an initiative to honor senior actors from Marathi entertainment industry while they still are active in the field, by Sailee Dream Ventures and Dream Shop Entertainment. The organizers Mangesh and Sudha Sawant and Bhushan Kadu whose brainchild is this idea, were unanimous on Vijumama’s name and when Vijay Chavan took stage in the garb of his trademark Mavshi costume, he received a standing ovation.

Incidentally Vijay Chavan has films like, ‘Zapatlela’, ‘Pachadlela’, ‘Zapatlela 2′, ‘Akleche Kande’, ‘Nana Mama’, ‘Misal Pav’, ‘Sangto Aika’, ‘Sasu cha Swayamvar’ to name a few. His son Varad started off the show with his crisp dancing in Ganesh Vandana and Natarang Naman. Pushkar Shrotri was his usual best in compering and some of his one-liners were intelligently tickling. Hemangi Kavi, Atul Todankar, Abhijit Chavan, Santosh Pawar, Kamalakar Satpute were part of the comedy skits while Pradeep Patwardhan and Kishore Ambiye staged a scene from Moruchi Mavshi with Vijumama himself. Deepali Sayyad, Pooja Sawant, Sanskruti Balgude enthralled the audience with their gyrating moves.
Plenty celebrities from the marathi film industry were present with best wishes for Vijay Chavan.

Vijay Chavan, a man of few words, thanked everybody for the good words and honor.

Genres: Comedy

Duration: 120 Min.
Cast:  Bhalchandra (Bhau) Kadam, Chinmay Udgirkar, Girija Joshi, Arati Solanki, Sanjay Mohite

Charlie Chaplin once said, “All I need to make a comedy, is a park, a policeman and a pretty girl.” These were perhaps his requirements, to create situation based comedy films. But, filmmaker R. Viraj , who seems to be inspired by film maker Dada Kondke and his style of presenting the film, needed two friends Yash (Rajesh Bhosale) and Raj (Chinmay Udgirkar) , struggling to make a film, a pretty girl Supriya ( Girija Joshi) and flamboyant rich landlord Bhau Damdar ( Bhau kadam), wanting to make a film, just to flirt with the aspiring actresses.

With coming together of all these characters, the film actually takes off, half an hour after the introduction of all of them, which usually happens with all Marathi comedy films. As the screenplay of this film progresses, we find these two friends, making plans to extract money from the producer , playing all their tricks to fool him. But, when they come to know that he himself wants to play the lead character, they are in real trouble. The girl, whom Raj selects as the leading lady, turns out to be the sister of Yash; thus inviting more problems for them. So, they introduce a lady character, in the form of Chatak Chandani( Aarti Solanki) a professional tamasha artist, to lure the producer.

Girija Joshi, Chinmay Udgirkar

With this limited content, the film tries to entertain the audience, with the help of some double meaning dialogues; which are inspired by Dada Kondke films and some laughter, through few humor filled scenes. There are few songs in the film, which are just fine enough to meet the requirement of the film. It would have been better, if the last title song, which is a hit song from a video album, was included as part of the film. Best thing about the film, is its clever photography by Ankush Birajdar, who has tried to capture indoor as well as outdoor scenes, skillfully.

Director Viraj, has managed to extract good performance from versatile actor Bhau Kadam , lead actress talented Girija Joshi and other supporting artistes. But, while presenting the character of Chinmay Udgirkar, he has allowed him to imitate the style of Shahrukh Khan, more than required. One expected screenplay to be more appealing and dialogues to be original , to generate spontaneous amusement. Nevertheless, Bhau Kadam with his mere presence on the screen and Girija Joshi, with her glam looks, have tried to invite the attention of the viewers.

All in all, ‘Vaajlach Paahije! Game Ki Shinema’, offers average Entertainment.

Today, she has bagged a lead role in Shreyas Talpade’s debut TV serial ‘Tumcha Aamcha same Asata’ on Star Pravah.

This being Shreyas’ home production, there is lot of marketing done, for its promotion. At every prominent spot in Mumbai city, you find the huge posters of this serial displayed. And, the person who has been benefitted the most, is young actress Amruta Deshmukh. Today, she is the talk of the town.

Amruta who is originally from Pune, completed her BA with Psychology from S.P.College and later did her Post Graduate Course in Mass Communication & Journalism from Ranade Institute affiliated to Pune University. Amruta has been active with acting field, since her college days, and has also bagged a silver medal for best actress, in a prestigious inter collegiate drama competition. When Amruta first came to Mumbai to give audition, she couldn’t find suitable roles. So, she worked as intern for two months with TV 9 channel. So, we have another actress, after Prarthana Behere, who has worked a s a TV Journalist.

When we spoke to Amruta, we did ask her, as to why she took up a job in TV channel as a Journalist, when she came to Mumbai to become an actress. And, Amruta was frank enough to admit that she gave auditions for some film productions, but wasn’t getting selected. “I actually wanted to play a village girl, as Marathi films these days are rural based . But, couldn’t get through the auditions. At that point, I thought that I was not meant for such roles. So, I decided to take up job in Media house, as I had already done my course in Journalism. It was a question of my survival, in this city of dreams,” she explained.

Amruta first found a role in the serial ‘Pudhcha Paul’ and later in detective serial ‘Asmita’. These were not prominent roles; but, were enough to make her presence felt. But, Amruta was very positive, that one day, she would get a lead role. Perhaps, the popularity of the serial ‘Asmita’ proved to be lucky for Amruta, though she played a slightly negative role.

Now that she is playing the lead role of Gauri, in the serial ‘Tumcha Aamcha Same Asata’, Amruta is very delighted. She is playing a Psychologist in this serial. Incidentally, Amruta has done her graduation with specialization in this subject. “Yes, I am happy and also glad that the serial is being promoted in a big way, so as to reach maximum people. Swwapnil Joshi, ActorSwapnil Joshi, the so called superstar of Marathi films, was in great form, when his film ‘Duniyadari’ became a hit, in the year 2013. This also helped , in the success of subsequent film ‘Mangalashtaka  Once More’ released few months later, as he was riding on the success of his previous film. But, some critics felt that ‘Mangalashtaka Once More’ received good response, because there was Mukta Barve, talented Marathi actress, as his co star.

Later, Swapnil did sign two big films. One of them was Sanjay Jadhav’s ‘Pyarwali Love Story’ with Sai Tamhankar  and the other was ‘Welcome Zindagi’ with Amruta Khanvilkar, another talented actress. But, ‘Pyarwali Love Story’  didn’t do well. And, ‘Welcome Zindagi’, which was released in June this year, was a flop.   The only film which gave him respite , was ‘Mitwa’ , which was released on Valentine’s day, early this year. But, once again, the critics felt that success of ‘Mitwa’ was its mesmerizing music.

Swapnil then had lots of hopes from Sanjay Jadhav’s love story ‘Tu Hi Re’, which was released few days ago. But, once again, this film too did business, below expectation. And, this gave an impression, that the popularity of  Superstar was diminishing. Swapnil himself, will have to find the reasons, as to why his last two films didn’t do well.

Even otherwise, he desperately needs one hit, before the end of the year, to remain in the race. At present, hero of Marathi films, is its story. And, therefore, success of Marathi films is totally dependent on good story, which would appeal the audience . Anyway, Swapnil’s  next film will be ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai-2′ , which is for Diwali release. There is one more film, he has signed with director Swapna Waghmare and then there will be another big banner film, for which the search for  his actress, is going on through 9x Jhakaas reality show contest.  Will ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai-2′ prove lucky for him, to bounce back ? Let us wait till Diwali. But, till then, he will have to work very hard, on promoting his forthcoming film.

Marathi TV serials getting ready to welcome Ganapati Bappa

Colors Marathi Serial, Ganpati, Ganeshotsav

Come Ganapati festival and we witness almost all Marathi TV serials worshipping the idol of Ganapati Bappa. In ‘Assa Saasar Surekh Bai’ on Colors Marathi, we have already seen decorations going on in Yash and Jui’s office, to welcome Ganapati Bappa. We also saw Jui helping Yash to make the idol of Ganapati from clay. But, we don’t know, whether it is environment friendly idol. That is yet to be announced.

Traditionally, we find most of the serials, creating awareness about environment friendly idols. On the same channel in ‘Kamla’, it will be interesting to see, who will perform the Ganapati Puja. Sharu or kamla, if at all, there is Ganapati Puja in their house? And, what will Shubhra do in ‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’? At present, she is busy teaching a lesson to the actress, equipping herself with perfect choreography. But, we will surely see the Aarti being held either at Jai- Aditi’s office or at their so called kaka’s house.
Ganeshotsav 2015, Celebration, Marathi Television
In ‘Asmita’ on Zee Marathi channel, we saw, Asmita’s husband getting ready to bring home Ganpati idol. By the way, they already have a little guest in their house, whom they have treated as God’s messenger. Though Asmita is dressed up in Saree, to get ready for festive season, there is no holiday for her, as ‘Work is Worship’ in her case. By the way, she looks very nice in Sarees. On Star Pravah channel, we are likely to see Ganapati Puja in serials like ‘Runji’ and ‘Tumacha Aamcha Same Asata’. On the same channel, we are watching Dr.Amol Kolhe, visiting various Ganapati Mandals across Pune, to check their preparations. By the way, he is taking lot of interest in presenting this programme. He just loves anchoring.

In Zee Marathi laughter show, ‘Chala Hava Yeu Dya’, we saw something different this time. The concept was ‘Same to Same’, where we saw all those lookalike faces of well known actors, from Hindi and Marathi film industry. Some of them had a lot of resemblance, but we have seen them in so many Hindi programmes in the past. The programme should have given chance to newcomers, especially our own Marathi speaking artistes, like those three, who resembled Nana Patekar, Makarand Anaspure and Govinda and also one, who did mimicry of all big stars. Most of the participants could not speak Marathi. So, it was almost like a Hindi programme, losing its Marathi identity. And, that was the only disappointment,, as the programme concept was good.
