Ganpati Bappa Morya, Marathi Serial, Ganesha

‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’

After achieving success through his Super hit mythological serial ‘Jai Malhar’ on Zee Marathi, Producer director Mahesh Kothare is now all set to offer his next mythological serial ‘Ganapati Bappa Morya’, which will be telecast this time on Colors Marathi channel. This will be much bigger project, cost wise, than the previous serial, as the set cost of this serial has touched around 1.75 Crore. Even otherwise, while offering a serial based on mythology, there is lot of cost on art design, costumes and special effects and the well known film maker, has accepted all these challenges. Having gained a lot of experience through ‘Jai Malhar’, this time, we expect something big from him.

‘Ganapati Bappa Morya’ will be telecast from Tuesday 24th November 2015 at 8.30 pm from Monday to Saturday. Since, this serial is based on mythology ,with more emphasis on Mother –son relationship, it will be interesting to see the events involving Parvati and Ganesha. With women and children likely to shift to this serial, Zee Marathi’s ‘Majhe Pati Soubhagyavati’ will face a tough competition, at prime time 8.30 pm.

Actually, this serial witnesses overacting from Vaibhav Mangle, especially in his original male appearance, in all those scenes of excessive drinking in the company of friends and later abusing others. Even otherwise, Vaibhav Mangle taking his hair dresser for granted, to use her house, for his change over, that too in absence of her husband, looks odd and unconvincing.

Incidentally, Colors have also started an entertaining reality show for housewives, ‘Aamchya Gharaat Suunbai Joraat’, anchored by Harish Dudhade (‘Majhe Mann Tujhe Jhale’ fame). With new team games for housewives, the show is likely to compete with Aadesh Bhauji’s ‘Home Minister’ on Zee Marathi. After dismal show in the initial episodes, their comedy show ‘Aali Lahar kela kahar’ seem to have shown some improvisation, taking up the local issues of Mumbaikars and especially Marathi people, through the skits in the recent episodes. But, in ‘Asa Sasar Surekh Bai’, they need to include some interesting happenings, rather than stretching on the problems faced by Yash’s uncle and his family. But, the saving grace of this serial is Mrunal Dusanis, whose presence on the screen, makes the viewers happy.

It is better not to talk much about ‘Star Pravah’ serials. It is high time, they replace their old serials, with outdated subjects with new offerings. Now, they are also facing competition from  who have also started showing serials on social issues with better subjects, that too at prime time. And, we have already covered them last time.

Resul Pookutty on location ‘Kshitij’

Oscars award winner famous Indian film sound designer Resul Pookutty recently experimented something new for Marathi films. Resul recently recorded On- location background music for Marathi film ‘Kshitij’. The shooting of this film was recently held in a village Nanaj in Jamkhed Taluka place, where the makers were shooting a devotional bhajan. So, this experiment of recording on location sound was attempted  by Resul Pookutty.

Later, speaking about this experiment in Marathi films, the award winning sound designer said, “There are many changes taking place in films during the past few years, due to technological developments. But, the changes were noticed in sound effects only during the past two years. Generally, sound effects were used in post production stage. But, in Marathi cinema, we have tried this On Location sound recording, for more perfection, to give a realistic look to the film, which you will notice in the film ‘Kshitij’. “ he said.

‘Kshitij’ is produced by Navroz Prasala & Karishma Mahadolkar and directed by Manoj kadam. The film stars Upendra Limaye, Manoj Joshi, Kanchan Jadhav, Sanjay Mone, child artiste Apurva Mandrupkar in lead roles along with other new artistes. This film will ready for release in the coming year.

Movie Review by:
Ulhas Shirke

Shooting of a film, in a film,  is not new to Marathi cinema. In the past we have seen this happen in the film ‘Pipani’ and very recently, we saw it happen in the film ‘Mungala’. Now, film maker Milind Arun Kavade has presented one such theme, through his latest released Marathi film ‘Shinma’. Produced by Aanil Joshi, the film presents the shooting of a film, at a village in Maharashtra in drought affected district.

Director K.Vasu( Ajinkya Deo) , whose real name is Keshav Vasudev Bhosale, takes up a commercial project, with the help of his production manager( Vijay Patkar) , only to raise money for his wife’s ( Nisha Parulekar) operation; who is in coma, after meeting with a road accident. To please the  producer couple Mr. & Mrs. Ganda ( Yatin Karyekar and Kishori Shahane), they plan to make a remake of ‘Sholay’ in Marathi. Accordingly, they move to a village location, which is already facing water scarcity problem, due to drought in that region. But, with the support of a social worker Navin( Ganesh Yadav) and Sarpanch of the village (Digambar Naik) they begin the shooting of their film, with all their important characters played by Jai(Asish Pawar), Veeru(Arun kadam), Basanti(Gurleen Chopra) and others.

Shinma Film, Saraubh Gokhale, Ajinkya Deo, VIjay Patkar

‘Shinma’ Moviestill. Saraubh Gokhale, Ajinkya Deo, VIjay Patkar

But, soon at the request of social activist Navin and his sister ( Sanskruti Balgude)they agree to‘In-film branding’ into their film, to highlight the water scarcity problem in the village, in spite of the help assured by the Government. So, besides the humor filled happenings noticed during the shooting, we also find K.Vasu’s assistant director ( Saurabh Gokhale) and Navin Sister’s (Sanskruti  Balgude) love affair progressing side by side, on the outskirts of  the village. After watching all the incidents,  that we see happen in the film industry, over the issues arising out of delay in shooting and threats issued by artistes , finally we see a surprise in the climax.

The film has a very big team of artistes, including film artistes and the villagers and therefore, except for the character of film director played by Ajinkya Deo, there is limited scope to all others. In the film, we notice two lengthy scenes of Ajinkya Deo, trying to converse with his wife lying in Coma in the hospital, over phone. But, they have not even shown the ailing mother of  actress Gurleen Chopra, whose is also undergoing treatment in hospital. More than the film artistes Gurleen Chopra, Ashish Pawar & Arun kadam shown in this film, there is more scope given to the so called production manager played by Vijay Patkar and the so called producer Ganda, played by Yatin karyekar.  The latter has also  been given scenes, flirting  with the actress Gurleen in swimming pool, perhaps to highlight the casting couch mentality in the film industry.

All the artistes selected in the film, have given their best. But, there is very less scope for Sanskruti Balgude in the film. In comparison, Gurleen Chopra finds better scope and she has played her character very well. In short, her debut in Marathi films, has been good. What is worth praising is that, she has tried to speak most of her dialogues in Marathi, unlike other non Marathi actresses noticed in Marathi films, in the recent past. It is understood that she has herself  dubbed for her own dialogues in Marathi. With her fit and slim looks, this beautiful Punjabi actress has also performed the dance very well, in the company of choreographer Ganesh Acharya.  Music does not appeal much, except for one song; but, Santanio Terezio has impressed with his beautiful cinematography, most of which  has been shot in the outdoors.

All in all, Director Milind Kavade has tried to create awareness about wastage of water by people living in city and Government’s apathy to provide relief to drought affected villages, in spite of sanctioning huge amount for water conservation schemes. In short, he has used this medium of entertainment well, to pass on this social message skillfully , through this film.

Umesh Kulkarni

Umesh Kulkarni

After the success of  previous three editions  of his ‘Shoot a short’ workshop on short film making, Umesh Kulkarni has announced  the fourth edition of  this workshop, which is to be held    between 10th December to 13th December 2015 at NFAI, Kothrud, Pune. The enthusiasm shown by the participants & continuous enquiries from the people, has encouraged Umesh   to arrange the workshop for the fourth time.

Three time National Award recipient director Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni and film academician Samar Nakhate will be conducting this  workshop. And, the workshop will primarily be held in Marathi Language. Therefore for Prospective Marathi film makers, this is a golden opportunity to  learn something worthwhile, from these experts.

Passionate about short films, as an independent form of storytelling,  Umesh Kulkarni says that despite the easy access to technology and resources available to upcoming filmmakers, there aren’t good content driven short films, being made in India. “By providing the right inputs through this workshop, I believe, enthusiast participants can develop a better perspective and understanding of the medium of short filmmaking. Short films and feature films are as different as short stories and novels,  hence should not be compared on the same level”, he added.

At the workshop, aspects such as basic concepts of film making, fundamentals of Production of Short Film, Translating Idea into a Script, Pre-Production, Production and Post Production, working with Actors / Non Actors, Crew Management and Scope for Shorts at Short Film Festivals will be dealt with. After the workshop, participants will be asked to submit scripts of their short films out of which 4 will be selected and produced by Aroh Velankar’s  “Rangartha Productions”. The workshop is open for people above 18 years of age.

It may be recalled that besides producing  feature films like Valu, Vihir, Deool and Highway , Umesh has eight short films to his credit. More importantly,  Umesh Kulkarni has also kept his passion for short films alive. And therefore, to  keep the short films movement growing, he has also started a short film club in Pune.  The workshop will be conducted in the National Film Archive of India, Kothrud on 10, 11, 12 & 13th of December 2015.

During the past three decades, we have seen many lead actors coming into Marathi film industry. Some of them, have come and disappeared, while others have shifted to character roles. But, there is one such actor, who still plays the lead role, for the past 33 years. In today’s competitive world of Marathi cinema, Ajinkya Deo is still matchless. He has already completed century of his films, in Hindi and Marathi films. Last Friday, his film ‘Shinma’ was released, in lead role and now his next film ‘Nagpur Adhiveshan’ also in the lead role, is due for release. It may be recalled that last year, his film ‘Bhatukli’ was released, also in the lead role.

Ajinkya Deo

MarathiMovieWorld.com had a chit chat with this evergreen actor and this smart and handsome actor, spoke about his present progress in film industry. “Yes, somehow I am lucky to find suitable lead roles for me, in Marathi films, even now. In ‘Shinma’ I was offered the role of a film director, as there is an actual  film’s shooting in this film. It’s a good challenging role, as the film, besides offering entertainment, also delivers a social message, very skillfully. My forthcoming film ‘Nagpur Adhiveshan’ is a comedy film, where I am playing a politician. Now, I will be getting busy with a mega serial on Star Plus and then there will be second part of our home production ‘24’, which will also be aired soon. By the way, I am also doing an Indo –British film ‘Bombayria’ in the lead role.” he said.

Having played the character of a director in ‘Shinma‘, we did remind him, whether, in near future, he will be directing a project? And, he quickly reacted, “Yes’ I has a good experience of playing a director’s role, in the film ‘Shinma’.”

Finally, when we asked him to react on Aamir Khan’s latest controversial remarks, he diplomatically said, “Well, I don’t want to comment on this issue, as these are his personal comments and in democracy, anyone can express their feelings. So, I don’t want to react on that.” he concluded.

Nitin Adsul has been living in USA for the past several years; but he has been watching all Marathi films. Knowing about the good response received by Marathi films, based on good scripts, for a long time, he was thinking about making a Marathi film, on the true story happening in the life of his father’s uncle, a farmer from a village in Nagar district, in Maharashtra. Since, Mr. Adsul who lives in Washington DC and a co founder of East West Films; he narrated this true story to his partners and they all agreed to make a Marathi film on this universal subject. And, that’s how Partu’ was shot in Rajasthan and Maharashtra, at the end of last year and beginning of this year.

‘Partu’ is now all set to release on coming Friday and Nitin is eager to know the response of the audience to his debut Marathi film. The story ‘Partu’ revolves around a small boy, who is lost in Maharashtra and is offered shelter by a poor farmer and his family. The farmer tries to search his family in Rajasthan, but in vain. So, he brings up this boy along with his two children and prospers in his Agri business. He also finds a bride for this boy and gets him married. It is an interesting tale of a farmer, who hasn’t given up hopes, to search the biological parents of this boy. Finally, when he finds them, it is interesting to see, what this young boy does.

“I am sure, this story will appeal to audience from different parts of the world, besides the Indian audience. But, my target audience is from Maharashtra and Rajasthan. After all, it is a true story, which happened in the life of my Father’s uncle, living in Nagar district and has a connect with a boy from Rajasthan,” he concluded.

Natsamarat Marathi Movie, Jitendra Joshi, Medha Manjrekar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Nana Patkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Neha Pendse

Jitendra Joshi, Nikhil Sane, Medha Manjrekar, Mahesh Manjrekar, VIshwas Joshi, VIkram GOkhale, Nana Patkar, Sunil Barve, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Neha Pendse

Last year, well known actor  made his presence felt, when he played the role of Dr.Prakash Baba Amte’ in the film on the life of a great social activist. This year, he was already in the news, for his initiative to help the families of poor farmers in Maharashtra, through his NAAM foundation. But, more than that, the news about his playing the lead role of Appa Belwalkar, in the cinematic version of  V.V. Shirwadkar’s famous play ‘Natasamraat’. This film directed by Mahesh Manjrekar is complete now; and will be released on 1st January 2016, which also happens to be Nana Patekar.

On Wednesday evening the makers of Natasamraat and the presenters of this film Zee Studios revealed the first look of this film, in a big way, in presence of entire star cast of the film, media and special invites. After releasing the first look, which was very impressive, a talk show was arranged by anchor Jitendra Joshi, when he invited the three pillars of this film, director Mahesh Manjrekar, lead actor Nana Patekar and veteran actor Vikram Gokhale, who is playing an important role in the film, which has been created by the director, taking the cinematic liberties.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahesh Manjrekar made it very clear that he didn’t want to present the story in the original form, as noticed in the play and hence took the liberty of adding additional important characters for artistes like Vikram Gokhale, Jitendra Joshi, Sandeep Pathak and few others. Vikram Gokhale, who spoke very few words, said that he liked the performance of Dr.Shreeram Lagoo playing this character  on stage; but felt that Nana had also done a very good job, in his own way.

However, the hero of the day was Nana Patekar, who narrated his experience of working with Mahesh Manjrekar as director. He narrated several such happenings, which generated instant laughter from the  audience present at the function. Mahesh tried to explain his side; but when Nana is around, it is very difficult for others to defend themselves. But, it was all in good spirit, as Nana even did not allow the anchor to answer all his questions. Instead of taking more time, he instead allowed others like Medha Manjreakar, Mrunmayee Deshpande, Sandeep Pathak, Sunil Barve, Neha Pendse and others to speak.  But, before that, he was all praise for the director , his wife Medha, who played his wife Kaveri in the film and Neha Pendse, who played his family member in the film.

Among the other dignitaries who were present on the occasion were, producer Vishwas Joshi, Mr. Nitin Kini & Nikhil sane from Zee Group, Suhas Joshi, Rajesh Deshpande, Kiran Yadnyopavit, Jaywant Wadkar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Bharat Dabholkar and Cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar , who was a surprise guest, to wish the team of ‘Natasamraat’.
