Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

V. V. Shirwadkar alias Kusumagraj was a  well known Marathi Poet and writer, who  was influenced by Shakespeare, Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Tolstoy in his writings. So, when he wrote his Marathi play ‘Natsamrat’‘, it was based on Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘King Lear’.  ‘Natasamraat’ was staged for many years with record number of shows and well known actors like Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Yashwant Dutt, Datta Bhat and others, have performed the central character of Ganpatrao Belvalkar successfully. But, the one performed by Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, is still fresh in the memory of those, who saw his great performance.

Now, director Mahesh Manjrekar has presented the cinematic version of this popular play, in his own way, with Nana Patekar playing the central character of Ganpatrao alias Appasaheb Belvalkar . And, in addition to his  family members comprising of wife kaveri (Medha Manjrekar), Son (Ajit Parab), daughter in law (Neha Pendse), grand daughter ( Pranjal Parab), daughter ( Mrunmayee Deshpande), son in law ( Sunil Barve), he has introduced a new character of Rambhau, played by versatile actor Vikram Gokhale, as his close friend. In  the process, he has extended his screenplay, with some witty conversations, taking place between the two friends, whenever they meet, over the session of drinks.

Natsamaraat marathi Moviestill

Nana Patekar in & as ‘Natsamrat’

In this film, the director has paid more attention on the home affairs of Ganpatrao, after his retirement, on receiving the highest honour of ‘NatSamrat’. In the process, the film has turned more into a family melodrama rather than a monologue, reminding you of some happenings  from  bollywood films  like ‘Baghban’, ‘jaisi karni Vaisi Bharni’, ‘Avtaar’ and few others.  In ‘Natasamrat’, Ganpatrao played by Nana Patekar  faces insults, first from his daughter in law, which forces him to leave his  own house, along with his wife Kaveri. But, before that Ganpatrao has committed a biggest mistake in his life, i.e. by  transferring all his assets in the name of his son and daughter. Ganpatrao being close to his daughter, is offered shelter by her and his son in law, in their house.

But, when the daughter alleges her own father for stealing her money, Ganpatrao and his wife quietly leave their house during the midnight hours of heavy rains, for onward journey to their native place. But, on the way, during a halt, Kaveri , who is already suffering from fever, passes away during her sleep. This brings Ganpatrao literally on the roads, as the person, who steals his bag, later offers him shelter under the bridge along with his small family. Though he is traced by his son and daughter, in an old drama theatre which is gutted in fire; Ganpatrao refuses to go with them and performs one last scene from his play , to conclude this film with its tragic end.

This film entirely belongs to actor Nana Patekar , who has played his role with total conviction. This is a lifetime role for a  complete actor in him. In short, ‘Natasamraat’ has brought out  the best out of Nana Patekar . But, this would not have been possible for him , without the support of Medha Manjrekar, who has given a wonderful performance as his co star Kaveri in this film. Medha has performed a role, which is more than her age; but, with her expressive face and good make up by Vikram Gaikwad, she was able to give her best. Another good performance, comes from young Mrunmayee Deshpande, who has done those two big emotion filled scenes, opposite senior experienced actor like Nana Patekar, exceptionally well.  There was no doubt about the ability of Vikram Gokhale, as he perfectly fitted into the witty character of Rambhau. The director has rightly taken close up scenes on him, to exploit his spontaneous facial expressions.  Among others in the supporting cast, good performances also come from Sunil Barve, Ajit Parab, Neha Pendse, Nilesh Divekar, Sarang Sathe , Jaywant Wadkar, little Pranjal Parab and others. But, Savita Malpekar and Vidyatai Patwardhan are just namesake in this film.  On location sound used by by Srikant kamble, art direction by Eknath kadam, cinematography by Ajith Reddy  and background score by Ajit Parab are the other plus points of this film.

This film, which presents the story of 70s era, does not actually relate to the changing lifestyle of today’s nuclear family system. So, it remains to be seen, how it appeals to today’s new generation. Moreover, today’s senior citizens have many other options after retirement. But, the central character of this film, being an actor, certainly sends a strong message to all those , for not committing the mistake done by Ganpatrao in this film. The film is technically very well presented and hence stands a chance of  inviting the attention of maximum film lovers. A worth watch, for the entire family together.

“We believe in the power of live music”– Lahu- Madhav

lahu-panchal-madhav-ajgaonkar

Having noticed many music director duos in Marathi and Hindi films, there is one more pair, which is emerging as the most promising music duo, in Marathi and Hindi films. Lahu Panchal and Madhav Ajgaonkar have today established themselves, with their quality music. Their understanding between each other is perfect, for every project. And, the bond of their friendship, exists from their college days, when they first met in Ramnarain Ruia College, which is a hub for cultural activities, besides offering good education.

Those days, Madhav used to play the synthesizer and Lahu was a good singer. After finishing college, Madhav pursued his interest in composing, while Lahu continued with singing and the duo toured all over the world. Maintaining good rapport between them, they had several music sittings for rehearsals. It was hard work, with lots of patience.

Finally, in the year 2012, both decided to introduce themselves as music composer Lahu-Madhav pair and did many albums in Hindi and Marathi. And, their hard work paid dividends, when they first got an opportunity to compose music for Hindi film Rajdhani Express, followed by Marathi films like ‘Dhyaas’ , ‘Yala Jeevan Aise Naav’ and now forthcoming Marathi film ‘Athang’, from which they have great hopes.

When Marathi Movie World spoke to them, Madhav who was found more vocal, between the two, said, “Undoubtedly, the most memorable moment for us, was our debut in Marathi films, with our very first song sung by the legendary singer Asha Bhosle. That first Marathi album for the film ‘Dhyaas’, also had three more songs, sung by Shaan, Kunal Ganjawala and Sonu Nigam. It was an honour, when Ashatai herself patted our backs, saying that she hardly got an opportunity to sing such a beautiful song “Tujhya ni Majhya…”, written by Mandar Cholkar. The best compliment we received, was from legendary Marathi composer Yashwant Deo, who also appreciated this song.

Later, talking about their debut Hindi film ‘Rajdhani Express’, he added, “ There was a song “Koi Umeed bar Nahi aati”, we composed, was based on the poetry of the legendary poet Mirza Ghalib and we presented it in two different styles. First, it was in the contemporary western style with western flute and distortion guitars, sung by Hitesh Prasad and the second one was a completely traditional Indian baithak kind of gazal, rendered by Shahid Maliya.

But, when we actually listended to Lahu Madhav’s music, we found it, an amalgamation of electronic and live music. When asked to comment on it, both said together, “We believe in the power of live music and insist on using live instruments.” It is for this reason, their music breathes and sounds so warm, with every new composition.

Madhav in particular, who also gives background music, using his name as Madhav Vijay, has scored background music for about 25 films, prominent among them are, ‘Investment’( which won the national award), ‘Nirmalya’, ‘Lagna Pahava karun’, ‘Lonavla Bypass’, ‘Antardah’, ‘Bavare Prem hey’ award winning film ‘Jana Gana Mana’,’Sugar Salt Aani Prem’,’Welcome Zindagi’ and ‘Dhinchak Enterprise’’ while ‘Athaang’ is an upcoming film.

Best thing about them is that they have a big collection of songs, which comes to their advantage. Yet, both of them have maintained a very low profile, in this Publicity crazy film industry.

Very few serials impress during 2015

Puja Thombre, Swanandi Tikekar

TV serials are generally meant for entertaining the home audience. Generally, the evening time is a pass time for housewives. For the working people, it is time for relaxation with light humour , after a tiring day; while for youngsters, it is time for some entertainment. But, are our Marathi TV serials offering the required entertainment to all such people ? Frankly speaking, during the year 2015, we did not notice, much of quality entertainment through these TV serials, except for few exceptions. But, the laughter shows, did entertain the audience to certain extent, on different channels.

Mrunal Dusanis in Assa Saasar Surekh Bai

Among the Marathi serials telecast on different channels, only ‘Dil Dosti Duniyadari’ on Zee Marathi provided good entertainment, especially inviting the attention of young audience. In fact, the young characters in this serial, represented different sections of society, to relate with the young audience. But, the subjects of other new serials , failed to impress and few of them had to say goodbye. Those, which are yet to find a proper grip on their story and screenplay are, ‘Asa Sasar Surekh Bai’ & ’Saraswati’ ( Recently released) ‘ on Colors, ‘Majhe Pati Soubhagyavati’ & ‘ Nanda Soukhyabhare’ on Zee Marathi, ‘Tumcha Aamcha Same Asata’ on Star Pravah. ‘Runji’ and ‘Kamala’ which began well, unfortunately disappointed , with their further progress. Surprisingly, some old serials on all channels, are still continuing, testing the patience of the audience.

Now, there is big hope from the new year 2016. And, it is high time that respective Marathi TV channels, seriously take into account the subjects, which would appeal all age groups. Actually, no serial should continue for more than a year, as it is very difficult to hold the grip on the story and at the same time, continue entertain the audience. During this first month of the new year, we are expecting one new serial in the form of ‘Pasant Aahe Mulgi’, with an interesting tagline; i.e. For a successful marriage, only matching the horoscope is not necessary; but, even the wavelength should match. Similarly, the wavelength of the characters performing in different serials, should match with the audience. Hope, our programme producers of all TV channels, keep this in mind, during this new year.

Films based on Spirituality have always found audience in Marathi. Therefore, we notice at least few films in a year, based on this theme. Forthcoming Marathi film ‘Lord of Shingnapur’ also highlights the subject of spirituality. The film is set on the backdrop of Lord Shanidev , by presenting a love story, well knitted into film’s screenplay. According to director Raj Rathod, who is himself a great devotee of Lord Shanidev, the film will inspire the audience , for the manner in which the spirit of Lord has been presented in this film.

Singer Sukhvinder Singh who has rendered a five minute long song in this film, also makes his acting debut in this film. For actor Ashutosh Kulkarni, this film should prove a blessing, as two of his films, which are complete, haven’t seen their release till date. His co star in the film Vaibhavi Shandilya, who has already made her debut through last year’s film ‘Por Bazaar’, is very hopeful from this film. Hindi television actor and popular personality Rahul Mahajan is also playing an important role in this film, along with other artistes like Milind Gunaji ( as Lord Shanidev) ,Varsha Usgaonkar, Sudhir Dalvi, Manoj Joshi, Pankaj Vishnu, Aniket Kelkar, Milind Joshi and others. The film is ready for release on 8th January 2016.

Zee Marathi’s ‘Maharashtrache Superstar’ talent contest held in 2010, offered many talented artistes to Marathi stage, television industry and also Marathi film industry. Though, Dr.Nilesh Sable and Yogini Chouk won the final round, all the 12 contestants shortlisted for the contest were super intelligent and it was a good contest. Vivek Raut, Namrata Awte, Nikhil Raut, Sneha Kulkarni made it to the final round, along with Nilesh and Yogini; but, among those who could not make it was Vijay Andalkar. The tall and smart actor from Pune, is now finding better roles in Marathi films.

Vijay is otherwise an excellent stage actor ; but, last year we saw him along with Abhijit Khandkekar, in an important role of Sangram Shinde in the film ‘Dhol Tashe’. He will also be seen in forthcoming film ‘Mr. & Mrs. Sadachari’ along with Vaibhav Tatwavdi . But, his next film in the lead role ‘702 Dixits’ is due for release on 15th January 2016 and Vijay is looking forward to a good response from the audience to this film, which is a suspense thriller. Recently, when we met him, during the music release of this film, he said, “In Marathi, there are not many suspense thrillers. Therefore, I am glad that director Shankh Rajadhyaksha has given me an opportunity to play lead role in this film.

In this film, Vijay is casted opposite two talented actresses Gauri Nigudkar and Pallavi Patil. Gauri is playing his wife, while Pallavi is playing his close friend. With ample talent in him, Vijay is all set to invite the attention of film lovers. Will he emerge as one of the most promising actors in Marathi film industry? MMW wishes him all the best.

Are Marathi film makers uncertain about release date of their films?

Marathi Movie Posters

One can understand about the healthy competition noticed among Marathi films, for the past few months. Yet, nothing has been done so far, about becoming firm on the release dates of their films. Sometimes, we notice 3 to 4 Marathi films being released at a time; but on a particular Fridays, there is no film released. One can understand about the decision of Marathi film makers, not release their film on 18th December 2015, due to release of two big banner Hindi films. But, on 25th of December, no film was released.

Mohar‘, which had earlier announced its release on 25th December, later thought of taking on the mighty ‘Natasamraat’ on 1st January 2016 and we saw the consequences of it.

Sangharshayatra’ which was scheduled for release on 11th December 2015, to coincide with the birth anniversary of late Gopinath Munde; postponed its release date at the last moment, even after issuing official advertisements about its release. Then we saw ‘Youth’ also postponing its release date from 15th January to 5th February 2016, for the reasons best known to its maker. Perhaps, this being a film on youth, they expected competition from ‘Friends’.

Now, talking about ‘Friends’, the film was supposed to release on 22nd January 2016, along with Sanjay Jadhav’s film ‘Guru’. But, now they have preponed their film’s release to 15th January 2016, along with films like ‘Shasan’ and ‘Chahato Mi Tula’. One can understand the association of Swapnil and Ankush during ‘Duniyadari’ and also Sachit’s   friendship with Ankush. So, possibly, they might have had some amicable solution, instead of clashing of their films, against each other.

Among the other Marathi films, which have announced their release dates in January 2016, are ‘Anuraag’- 21st January 2016, ‘Athang’ – 29th January 2016 and Mumbai Time also on 29th January 2016. And, we only hope that they don’t change their dates.

Come new year 2016 and we find the announcement of new Marathi films on traditional subjects. Some are based on the social family drama , some are based on  the faith in God. But, these film makers claim that the subject of their film is different. At present, they have launched their films with song recordings, while some have launched the first look of their film’s poster. But, the star cast of the  film , yet to be decided.

Among such films are ‘Soon Asavi Ashi’ produced by Vaishali Kodhe and directed by Shyam Dharmadhikari , launched with recording of all the songs and  ‘Vitthala Shappath’ written and directed by Chandrakant Pawar, with launch of first poster. In the case of both these films, the selection of artistes in the film, are not announced. And, this is also one way of promoting the film, as it creates a buzz in the industry , before the next announcements.  Perhaps, others may also follow this pattern for this new year.

‘Lord of Shingnapur’ – Just another film based on mythology

Movie Review by: Ulhas Shirke

Films based on mythology are very common in Hindi. In Marathi too, such films are released periodically. About 20 years ago, there was a film on Lord Shanidev, titled ‘Suryaputra Shanidev’ produced by Gulshan Kumar. Now, Raj Rathod has offered a film in Marathi ‘Lord of Shingnapur’, which is a tribute to Lord Shanidev and his power .

Lord of Shingnapur’ is not much different from ‘Suryaputra Shanidev’, as in this film too, the director has presented a story of young lovers Rohit ( Ashutosh Kulkarni) and Neha (Vaibhavi Shandilya) . But, in this film the young couple get married, against the wish of Rohit’s father ( Manoj Joshi). When his father refuses to take the couple in his house, Rohit and Neha leave the house to an unknown destination and meet with a serious car accident. While Rohit gets drowned into a river, Neha lies unconscious in an injured state.

Movie still from Lord Of Shingnapur

Rohit later finds himself in an ashram, but loses his memory; while Neha wandering in jungles, comes across Lord Shanidev in the guise of a saint, who suggests her to visit Shani Shingnapur. At the Ashram, another Saint, who heads the ashram, also suggests Rohit to proceed to Shani Shingnapur, after narrating him various tales of Lord Shanidev. Rohit’s parents, who are also in a disturbed state, move to Shani Shingnapur, where the film concludes with happy ending, with the reunion of Rohit, Neha and Rohit’s parents.

Film’s screenplay begins with not so interesting happenings, except for a song picturised on Rohit and Neha, to show their romance. The character of Rahul Mahajan is just to represent Rohit’s good friend, in few scenes. Even Manoj Joshi as Rohit’s father, has been used only to oppose Rohit’s marriage, in those few scenes, except for the last climax scene. However, Varsha Usgaonkar tries to impress through her small role of Rohit’s sympathetic mother. The film’s screenplay presents some interesting stories to show the power and strength of Lord Shanidev , when he in the form of Saturn, enters the zodiac sign of individuals, including Lord Shankara & Lord Bramhadev. Narration of these stories by a saint, shown in the film’s cinematic form, are the only interesting happenings in the film, as not many people are aware of the stories of Lord Shanidev.

However, in the process of giving importance to these stories, the main story of Rohit and Neha takes a back seat and remains just a predictable version .

Through this film, Ashutosh Kulkarni has finally found his entry into Marathi films as a lead actor. This is Vaibhavi’s second film after ‘Janiva’ and she shows promise, through her performance. Milind Gunaji, who plays Lord Shanidev in this film, taking different forms, is good and so is Sudhir Dalvi, through his small but favourite role of Sai Baba of Shirdi. The film could have been more appealing, if it had more special effects and a gripping love story, to show their struggle for reunion. All in all, ‘Lord of Shinganapur’ has turned out to be just another mythology based film , which is a tribute to Lord Shanidev. Therefore, it may appeal to regular viewers of such films. And, if it does so, ‘Shingnapur’ will turn another famous religious place, inviting more and more devotees. Others may prefer to watch this film on television, in due course of time.
